In early February 2026, heavy rainfall between 7 and 9 February triggered sudden and severe flooding across informal IDP camps in Idleb Governorate. Floodwaters inundated 21 displacement sites, directly affecting approximately 5,300 internally displaced persons and damaging or destroying nearly 2,000 tents. Roads were severely damaged, humanitarian access was disrupted, and already fragile camp infrastructure was overwhelmed. The affected population consists primarily of highly vulnerable displaced families living in overcrowded informal sites with weak shelter structures and limited drainage systems. Women and children constitute the majority of those affected, and risks of cold exposure, respiratory illness and waterborne disease have increased due to winter conditions and loss of adequate shelter. While humanitarian actors have initiated a coordinated multi-sector response, significant funding gaps, particularly in winterization and shelter assistance, limit the scale and speed of support to some of the most underserved and hard-to-reach IDP communities in north-west Syria.
