The recent long rains have caused flooding in lower plains of Nyakach Sub County within Kisumu County, Kenya. The Overflow of River Sondu Miriu and backflow of Lake Victoria has caused flooding in West Nyakach Location affecting Nyagoma and Nyadima Sub Locations, and in west Koguta Location, affecting lower Kadianga Sub locations. The back flow from River Nyando and River Awasi have caused flooding in North Nyakach Locations; Gemlal and Gemral Sub locations. This has also affected Rangoi location in Kanyawal and Wasare Sub locations. Nyando sub county has also experienced flash floods with weather forecast reports for April and May 2026, showing a high likelihood of flooding too. The Nyakach Sub county flood status report of 13th March 2026, indicates that the situation has started worsening noting 280 houses being submerged and destroyed, and 1722 people displaced with damaged property. In Nyando Sub County over 600 families have been rendered homeless and victims have found staying in the cold over the nights being vulnerable to sickness and diseases. 7 schools have been affected with floods reporting low turnout of school learners due to relocations negatively affected learning, 4 schools have been submerged with water. At the time 6952 people (1500 vulnerable households (HH) have been affected, with 1480 people moving to their neighbors and relative at higher grounds, and evacuation centers The number is increasingly rising, with most people lacking basic effects, like soap, dignity kits for girls and water treatment products, thus becoming vulnerable to sanitation hazards. Vulnerable groups are more likely to affected by diseases related to poor hygiene, mosquitoes and the cold nights. The reports also shows that farmlands of over 3465 acreage of crops and 3000 acres of grazing lands having been swept away by floods, with1280 livestock having been swept away. Business community have been hopeless trying to salvage sacks of rice soaked up in waters affecting the economic prospects of Nyakach. Health facilities have been flooded and many roads have been rendered impassable making it difficult to distribute food and evacuate victims. Latrines in the households and affected schools are overflowing with water and human wastes posing health hazards amongst the people.
