Why is accountability important?

Accountability is a key focus area for organisations working in civil society, development, and humanitarian aid. Increasingly, donors and the broader community require organisations to have an ethical code of conduct.

It is the responsibility of Danish grant holders to ensure that local partners also have procedures in place regarding these matters. Furthermore, Danish organizations and their partners have a particular responsibility to ensure that the target groups of grants are not subjected to abuse, exploitation, or harassment.

Below, you can read about various topics related to accountability. For each topic, you will find information, examples, and what CISU offers in terms of capacity building in that area.

Requirements and recommendations within accountability

CISU must ensure that grantees are informed of the requirements in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' guidelines. This includes the requirement for grantees to have an anti-corruption policy, a policy for the prevention of sexual harassment, exploitation, and abuse (PSEAH), a policy against child labor, and an anti-terrorism policy. These four policies can be developed separately or consolidated into an ethical code of conduct.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' anti-corruption, PSEAH, anti-child labor, and anti-terrorism clauses must be included in contracts and partnership agreements. The requirements for policies and procedures for these four clauses should be adjusted to the nature and scale of the initiatives, as well as the grantee’s professional and administrative capacity.

The table below shows the requirements and recommendations for the grantees depending on the grant portfolio of the organisation.
