Resume

The Strengthening Models for Inclusive Learning and Engagement in Oral Health (SMILE) project is led by REEP and DHWB in Kumbungu, Tolon and Savelugu to improve children's oral health through community-led prevention and behaviour change. Using a Training of Trainers (ToT) approach, REEP trains parent trainers and child peer trainers who share preventive oral health knowledge with their parent and peer groups in the districts and schools, reaching far beyond what direct staff delivery could achieve on its own. Teachers and School Health Education Programme (SHEP) coordinators co-select and support trainers, while engagement with traditional and community leaders builds local ownership. Referral pathways to King's Medical Centre remain in place for children needing treatment. As a low-cost, community-owned model, SMILE strengthens local capacity, embeds preventive practice in households and schools, and generates evidence to inform wider adoption across Ghana.
