This emergency response seeks to address the impact of the spike of the drought in Turkana county, which is one of seven counties in Kenya in Alarm Drought Phase. As acute malnutrition has surpassed the emergency threshold in many areas, the proposed intervention will provide in-kind food assistance to 4000 school children below the age of 15 years and 450 households in Kalapata ward. Food assistance will be supplemented with rehabilitation of 3 broken-down boreholes near 3 schools and for the community. Rehabilitation of water points has during the first DERF-funded intervention proved to be more effective than water trucking in meeting the longer-term water needs of the communities and schools. The intervention also addresses protection needs of women and girls related to gender based violence (GBV) that have risen due to the impact of drought.
