The drought in ASALs counties of Kenya has caused a severe water shortage leading to harvest failure and the decimation of livestock, which are the main sources of livelihoods. This has led to acute food insecurity, water shortage, malnutrition and protection concerns. The proposed intervention will provide in-kind food assistance to vulnerable households. As acute malnutrition has surpassed the emergency threshold in many areas, affecting between 15 per cent and 30% of children who are at particular risk, the proposed intervention will provide in-kind food assistance to 8374 school children below the age of 12 years. Food assistance will be supplemented with water supplies to schools whose boreholes and water sources have so far run dry. The intervention further seeks to address the protection needs of women and girls related to gender based violence (GBV).
