The intervention will address the problem of gender-based violence (GBV) in Egypt through the formation of local feminist networks in 7 different governorates. The intervention aims at raising awareness on the problem, empowering survivors of GBV and educating bystanders in a push for change. The network-based approach was applied in our former intervention “Comprehensive Gender Education of Youth in Egypt” with success and led to sustained efforts. Our experience is that loosely structured networks can operate more flexibly in a fragile social and political context with narrow space for civil society. There is a momentum to work with GBV as the local #MeToo movement has created a renewed focus on the topic and mobilized feminist activist all over the country. However, feminist organizations are struggling due to crackdowns by the Egyptian state and lacking funding opportunities. There is a need to strengthen the feminist movement and bridge the gap between online and offline activism.
