Piloting and consolidating a Farmer-centric and entire Food Systems supportive Agriculture Extension Services model for improved agricultural market access, and household food sustenance.

The formation of BAFCU was in response to the need for the four avocado farmers’ primary cooperative societies in the Busoga region to have a unified voice in addressing concerns about the avocado value chain on the local, national, and international stages. BAFCU’s primary role is to promote, coordinate, and support the mutual economic interests of its members by cooperative principles. In addition, BAFCU has roles of collaboration, networking, representation, and the promotion of the growth and development of the avocado industry in Busoga and Uganda as a whole. Busoga Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Union is a Secondary cooperative, the second in the four-tier structure of the Uganda Co-operative Movement following the Primary Cooperative Societies as the first tier at the bottom of the pyramid. There are four active primary cooperative societies under BAFCU, registered and in operation, offering various services that promote the avocado value chain for wealth creation, employment, and environmental sustainability in the Busoga region. These are: Iganga Cluster Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Society - P.20447/RCS); Jinja Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Society - (P.22284/RCS); Kamuli Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Society (P.21624/RCS), and; Luuka Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Society - (P.20780/RCS). BAFCU will effectively represent these four primary societies and at present membership of farmers, in the individual primary cooperative societies is as follows: nighty-four (94) in Iganga, fifty (50) in Jinja, ninety-three (93) in Kamuli, and thirty-eight (38) in Luuka. Total 286 farmers in the BAFCU-defined catchment area. BAFCU Mission: To coordinate and support wealth creation in member primary cooperative societies through fostering community mobilization, efficient technical service provision, and strategic partnerships within the entire avocado value chain.
