Chin Health Organization (CHO) was founded on November 6, 2021, after Myanmar’s February 2021 military coup by Chin health professionals who joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and refused to work under the junta. It was created to revitalize Chin State’s collapsed health system, where facilities were non-functional and health workers persecuted. CHO later registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the U.S. to receive international funding and support from organizations such as the UN. Today, over 500 health workers provide healthcare across Chin State through 64 clinics and 17 hospitals. CHO remains neutral and avoids political affiliations to maintain safety and credibility. CHO envisions health and wellbeing for communities in Chin State and neighbouring areas through equitable access to high-quality healthcare. It coordinates with partners and local authorities to strengthen the health system; mobilizes and diversifies sustainable funding; supports health professional institutions and personnel through technical, financial and continuous professional development; expands access to affordable, essential, high-quality healthcare; and prioritizes vulnerable populations through lifesaving emergency care and outbreak response. Primary activities are: 1. Primary and secondary healthcare for communities, including displaced people: maternal and child health, MHPSS, GBV services, patient referrals and immunization, while supporting volunteers, facilities and hospitals in Chin State and border areas. 2. Malaria, TB and HIV prevention and emergency responses, including an Early Warning, Alert and Response System. 3. Healthcare for persons with disabilities, including prosthetic devices, rehabilitation and mental health support. 4. Health-system strengthening with state and local authorities, health facilities and partners. 5. Support for frontline health workers in conflict-affected areas, including MHPSS initiatives promoting their wellbeing and resilience.
