SAN was first formed in 1997 when a group of NGOs from different countries decided to work together based on the conviction that sustainable agriculture could be harnessed as an effective tool for environmental protection while improving the lives of rural people. The partnership of Rainforest Alliance, Imaflora (Brazil), Fundación Natura (Colombia), ProNatura Sur (Mexico), ICADE (Honduras), FIIT (Guatemala) and SalvaNatura (El Salvador) was the beginning of the SAN membership. Our Vision: Agriculture healing and nourishing our extraordinary planet. Our Mission: Transforming agriculture towards a sustainable and equitable future for communities and nature. The overall strategic goals are to (i) Elevate SAN as a Global Impact Network; (ii) Advance Climate Mitigation and Adaptation; (iii) Enhance Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services; (iv) Empower Farming Communities through Equity. The SAN 2025-2030 Strategic Plan (as discussed and endorsed by the membership) outlines a bold vision for transforming agriculture to be more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient. This plan reflects our commitment to empowering communities, protecting ecosystems, and fostering collaboration across our global network. Over the next five years, we will focus on innovative practices, strategic partnerships, and measurable impacts that drive meaningful change in the agricultural sector.
