Plan B phase II

HOPin Academy was founded in 2013 in Tamale, Northern Ghana, by MacCarthy Mac-Gbathy, who continues to lead the organisation as its Executive Director. The idea emerged when MacCarthy wanted to produce a documentary about entrepreneurship among youth in Northern Ghana, where many face limited job opportunities and insecure migration paths. His personal journey of self-learning in film production and collaboration with international partners became the starting point for an organisation dedicated to creating sustainable opportunities for marginalised youth. Today, HOPin is a registered civil society organisation and social enterprise with a team of 20 staff and over 60 volunteers. The organisation’s mission is to reduce youth unemployment and poverty through entrepreneurship, innovation, and alternative livelihood pathways. HOPin works closely with schools, authorities, sports organisations, and local civil society groups to ensure local ownership and relevance. The organisation’s core activities include: Development of digital skills and IT training, creating access to remote work and improved job opportunities for young people in the region. Support for entrepreneurship and small businesses through training, mentoring, micro-financing, and co-working facilities that promote economic independence. Improvement of living conditions for marginalised youth footballers by strengthening their rights, protection, and economic opportunities. The organisation works to combine sports with education and vocational development, enabling young people to build sustainable life paths both within and beyond football. Special attention is given to the inclusion of girls and other marginalised groups, while also promoting safer and more accountable club environments that support both personal wellbeing and collective empowerment. A strong focus on gender equality, inclusion, and protection through mentoring programmes and safe learning environments that ensure the participation
