KNEIL is a not-for-profit, non-state entity governed by an independent, democratically elected board of institutional leaders and supported by a professional secretariat. KNEIL functions as a national platform where institutional leaders jointly analyze challenges, co-design solutions, and drive institutional change related to innovation and entrepreneurship. KNEIL was established to strengthen the capacity of universities and TVETs to develop, nurture, and sustain innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems within their institutions and surrounding communities. Its work is guided by five core pillars: promoting innovation, strengthening ecosystems, driving entrepreneurial transformation, supporting job creation and economic growth, and nurturing innovation ecosystems. From an initial group of a few universities concentrated around the capital, KNEIL has grown into a national network of over 25 universities and TVETs across Kenya, with expanding engagement in local communities.
