The Articulation of Social Movements and Civil Society Organizations (AMS) emerged in May 2018 amid mass mobilizations against the Ortega dictatorship in Nicaragua. It was triggered by brutal repression against youth and students demanding accountability for corruption at the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute (INSS) and the lack of policies to protect forest resources. AMS was created to contribute to the construction of a free, democratic, sustainable, and socially just society. It promotes a new political culture rooted in human rights, gender equality, environmental protection, interculturality, and multiculturalism through the strengthening and mobilization of grassroots organizations. AMS advocates for a democratic vision where all Nicaraguans actively participate in decision-making processes through legitimately elected representatives who ensure public consultation, oversight, and inclusive civic engagement related to social justice, democratization, and socioeconomic development. Objectives: Reactivate peaceful civic resistance to achieve the rapid removal of the Ortega-Murillo regime. Secure international condemnation and isolation of the regime for widespread human rights violations and crimes against humanity. Contribute to democratization with a comprehensive political, social, and economic program that centers historically excluded groups and builds consensus for a future electoral process while respecting the autonomy of member organizations. Strengthen political education and formation processes in diverse local movements from a feminist, class-based, environmental, anti-systemic, and human rights perspective—rejecting Nicaragua’s entrenched authoritarian, patriarchal, capitalist, and exclusionary political culture.
