A Rocha Ghana

A Rocha Ghana (ARG) was founded in 1999 as the Eden Conservation Society and formally joined the international A Rocha family in 2003, becoming the Ghanaian chapter of a global network present in dozens of countries and a member of IUCN. Over more than two decades, the organisation has grown into one of Ghana's leading environmental NGOs, delivering practical conservation interventions aimed at the sustainable management of the country's key ecological habitats. Purpose: ARG's mission is built around the conviction that human wellbeing and the survival of the earth's flora and fauna are inextricably linked, and it works to inspire and empower people to care for nature through advocacy, livelihood improvement, and sustainable natural resource management. Its guiding values emphasizes research-based conservation, strong community relationships, cross-cultural collaboration, and partnership with a wide range of organizations that share its commitment to a sustainable world. Primary activities: • Research and habitat protection — biodiversity research, ecological monitoring, and restoration work in priority landscapes such as the Atewa Range Forest Reserve and the Muni-Pomadze Ramsar wetland site, including mangrove replanting in areas degraded by charcoal production and firewood harvesting. • Environmental education and capacity building — programmes for people of all ages, alongside training for civil society organisations and community groups on natural resource governance. • Advocacy and policy engagement — campaigns and, where necessary, legal action to protect threatened ecosystems, most notably ARG's leading role in the ongoing legal challenge against bauxite mining in the Atewa forest. • Livelihood and community-based conservation — projects that link sustainable resource management with improved livelihoods for forest- and coastal-adjacent communities. • Partnership and donor-funded project delivery — implementation of multi-year, donor-funded programmes.
