Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) was established on 4 September 1963 and was officially recognised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 1964. Since its establishment, NRCS has developed into one of Nepal's largest humanitarian organisations, with a nationwide network of provincial and district branches, local sub-chapters and volunteers. Over more than six decades, NRCS has played a significant role in responding to humanitarian emergencies, including earthquakes, floods, landslides, disease outbreaks and other disasters. The organisation has also expanded its long-term development activities, particularly within community health, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience and community development. The primary purpose of NRCS is to prevent and alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and promote human dignity, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. As an auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field, NRCS supports national and local efforts to address humanitarian needs while operating in accordance with the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. NRCS aims to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities, reduce disaster risks, improve access to essential services and empower people to prepare for, respond to and recover from crises. NRCS carries out a broad range of humanitarian and development activities.
