LGBT+ Rights Ghana is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Ghana. Established in 2018 as an online activism blog, it has since grown to become one of the leading organizations championing the rights of LGBTQIA+ people in the country, who have recently faced escalating persecution and discrimination. The organization's primary efforts include hosting events and workshops to foster community among LGBTQIA+ individuals, gathering data on the abuse and persecution of community members, and organizing advocacy campaigns and protests. Funded mainly through crowdfunding, LGBT+ Rights Ghana has raised tens of thousands of dollars in donations via GoFundMe, PayPal, and MTN Mobile Money. Donations surged in February 2021 when the organization made headlines after its newly opened office and community center were raided and shut down by Ghanaian authorities. In addition to a small staff, the organization relies on volunteers to sustain operations and organize events, aiming to provide visibility and community support to counter prejudice and discrimination and promote a safer, more inclusive society. LGBT+ Rights Ghana regularly organizes events and workshops to build community among LGBTQIA+ individuals, including panel discussions, speaker series, community socials, music and arts events, and interfaith vigils. While many events are held virtually via Zoom, security is provided for in-person meetings and workshops to ensure participants' safety. The organization also conducts resistance campaigns against anti-LGBTQIA+ policies and rhetoric. Supporters of LGBT+ Rights Ghana can become official members, gaining access to newsletters, events, and training, as well as support structures for reporting abuse, accommodation, mental and physical health services, legal assistance, and educational and economic support. Membership is free, requiring an application vetted for community security.
