Overall targets

Empowering youth voices to take action, participate and initiate positive changes that contributes to the development of peaceful, inclusive, sustainable and equal communities in South Africa.

Immediate targets

The immediate development objectives for the proposed intervention therefore are: 1) To empower, inspire and train youth in Grabouw and Elgin Valley in the Theewaterskloof Municipality to mobilise their communities and become drivers of social change through youth-led activism and SE. 2) To provide relevant training for staff and to further strengthen the local board of DWB SA.

Target groups

The direct target group is 25 learners from grade 9-12 attending four different high schools in Grabouw and Elgin Valley in Theewaterskloof Municipality in South Africa’s Western Province. Learners at the local high schools in the area are in the age group 14-21 years. Another direct target group is the board and staff of DWB SA, who will build their organisational capacity through relevant trainings and workshops. Another direct target group is the volunteers that the students are expected to recruit for their projects. We expect the students to recruit minimum 50 volunteers, depending on the type of project/campaign they choose. Volunteers are very broadly put other members of the community. They can therefore be all ages and from very diverse backgrounds or settings. The volunteers will be recruited through the schools and networks build and the local Thusong Community Centre. Indirect target groups are parents/caretakers of the students, the broader civil society, such as community members, learners at schools, local and provincial authorities and other relevant stakeholders, the work mentors and stakeholders that the students will build relationships with, a network they will be able to rely on even after the intervention has ended.

Resume

This intervention aims to mobilise marginalised youth to become drivers of positive social change in the rural town Grabouw and in the Elgin Valley in South Africa. An important objective is that the youth develop and implement social activist projects and social entrepreneurship start-ups in their community. The youth will collaborate with local stakeholders and mobilise other members of their communities, promoting voluntarism and community collaboration. The direct target group is 25 learners from grade 9-12 attending four different high schools, as well as a minimum of 50 volunteers. We expect the youth to reach +/- 10.000 people when advocating for their projects through video-letters, podcasts, events and exhibition. The project is implemented in collaboration with Designers without Borders SA, and through the intervention there will also be a focus on organisational capacity building of partner, through relevant trainings.
