Resume

The growing global demand for rice starkly contrasts with the extreme poverty faced by those engaged in its production, smallholders and farm labourers alike. Acknowledging a pressing need to improve farm-level livelihoods of this sector, especially considering its climate change vulnerability, the intervention will improve civic and economic space of poor rice farmer communities in Central and East Java, Indonesia. This will be achieved by increasing farm productivity through adoption of Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) production practices and advocating for government recognition of SRP-certified rice as ‘specialty rice’, thereby enabling farmers to secure higher income, while producing healthy and sustainable rice. The project strengthens internal capacity of both local partners and empower farmer organisations to advocate for farmer interests, while adopting sustainable rice cultivation methods that generate long-term economic, social, environmental, health and climate benefits.
