The objective is to capacitate 3 South African CSOs to advocate against the growing issue of food insecurity in Grabouw/Elgin Valley. And to empower them to create awareness about health and nutrition in the communities where they work. Their operations are spread into the poorest areas and include informal areas with no services (sewage, water, electricity). The CSOs work with people most in need. These are children, pregnant mothers, elderly, homeless and people with disabilities or on chronic medication (ART therapy for HIV/AIDS). Main activities are workshops introducing the CSOs to the role of different levels of government, the basic rights of civil society, how socioeconomic inequality is linked to food insecurity and health inequality and land and water rights. Also, an activity is to establish a pilot community kitchen that can function as a nutritional hotspot and learning/information hub for the community. Finally, a focus will be on training in nutrition and food literacy.
