Resume

The intervention aims to reduce the anticipated humanitarian impacts of severe wildfires in the Pantanal during the 2026 fire season through locally led early action measures targeting highly vulnerable Indigenous, riverine, and rural communities in the municipalities of Miranda, Corumbá, and Ladário in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Based on official climate forecasts, drought monitoring, river-level data, and emergency declarations issued by Brazilian authorities, the intervention will support 14 high-risk communities and community-based groups through improved community early warning systems and coordinations, weather data and fire prevention measures. By acting now before peak fire conditions intensify between July and October 2026, the intervention is expected to reduce risks to lives, health, livelihoods, and local food security, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, children, elderly people, and people with disabilities.
