Cyclone Freddy struck Mozambique for a second time as a severe tropical cyclone on 11 March, hitting Zambézia Province with winds of 148 km/h and gusts up to 213 km/h. The cyclone has become the longest-lasting storm on record, travelling across the Indian Ocean over 32 days. Thousands of people have been affected. There is loss of life, health, livelihoods, and shelter. It is estimate that almost 40.000 people have been displaced. The location of the response, Maganja da Costa District, is the second most affected district with 78,395 people in need corresponding 15.679 households and 50,000 affected farm areas and 17 deaths. With DERF support, given the grave needs in Zambezia, to prevent further loss of life and escalation of suffering among people affected by the Cyclone, SustainableEnergy and Livaningo will focus this response on two main sectors: Food assistance to people in resettlement centres and WASH focuses on the provision of hygiene kits accompanied by hygiene promotion.
