The humanitarian crisis in Galkaio district and neighbouring areas has been primarily triggered by these flash floods caused by heavy Gu (April to June) seasonal rains. Approximately 5,800 people residing in Qabooje and Elfarah Gedi displacement camps 15 km from Galkayo district have been severely impacted. Floodwaters contaminated by waste and damaged sanitation systems have heightened the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD), particularly affecting children and vulnerable groups with 22 patients admitted during the rainy season. Over 1,750 livestock were lost, significantly affecting vulnerable people whose livelihoods depend on pastoralism, livestock rearing, seasonal farming. The project objective is to provide emergency food assistance, NFIs, and awareness workshops on protection to vulnerable flood-affected populations in Qabooje and Elfarah Gedi camps to improve livelihoods.
