Resume

People in Zambian prisons face high burdens of HIV/TB, malnutrition and psychosocial distress, yet service remain inadequate. This project will turn the 2013 Zambia Prisons Health System Strengthening (ZaPHSS) Framework roadmap into an implementation-ready ZaPHSS 2.0 package including minimum standards, input specifications and worked examples, for routine use by the Zambian Correctional Service. As part of the new package, Ubumi Zambia will demonstrate the inmate-led Ubumi Model in one facility, and, with Danish AIDS Foundation co-funding, run a mixed-methods before-and-after study to test effects on BMI, haemoglobin, HIV indicators and distress outcomes. Through the Prison Health Advisory Committee, partners including CIDRZ and In But Free, will turn findings into advocacy briefs and tools, equipping civil society to advocate for practical, workable interventions that expand access to quality care for people in custody, especially the most vulnerable.
