Ubumi Prisons Initiative Zambia
Ubumi Prisons Initiative Zambia was registered as a non-governmental organisation in Zambia in 2014. Ubumi Zambia (UZ) is focused on improving the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly within Zambia’s correctional system, but also vulnerable populations at large. At the heart of UZ’s work is the Ubumi Model, an award-winning framework that integrates inmate empowerment, capacity building, and advocacy to improve mental health, somatic health, and the management of serious illnesses. This model aims to provide holistic care by addressing the physical, psychological, and social health needs of inmates. It combines healthcare services with advocacy for human rights, promoting a comprehensive approach to improving prison health. UZ also provides reintegration support for former inmates, assisting them with education, training, and social reintegration, as well as actively engaging in advocacy for reintegration. Through partnerships with local civil society organisations and government bodies such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Home Affairs, and ZCS, Ubumi Zambia works to strengthen health systems within prisons and ensure the sustainability of its programmes. UZ’s work fosters local ownership and empowers stakeholders to maintain and expand these services, creating a more supportive environment for vulnerable populations in Zambia.
