The intervention aims to alleviate hunger in 2344 children in 10 schools in Makueni District, Kenya. A hot meal is served daily and is prepared at the schools. This will have an impact on the children's nutritional status and on their attendance at schools, an attendance that has been failing during the drought. The development objective of the intervention is to enable schools to better withstand and respond to future climate change with prolonged periods of drought. Therefore, water tanks are set up in the schools and water harvesting facilities are established. To ensure better self-sufficiency during future droughts, the 10 schools start kitchen gardens and plant trees in their free areas at their schools. The intervention is implemented by a local CBO with contact to the 10 schools and extensive experience in collaborating with authorities and local people.
