Resume

Alcohol and substance use disorders (ASUD) are highly prevalent in correctional settings, where inmates may bring an ASUD in with them but may also develop it behind bars. The aim of this project is to contribute to breaking the secrecy and stigma surrounding the issue and improving access to health services for both inmates and staff suffering from ASUD in Zambia. The project will aim to quantify and understand the issue through a quality nationwide study, which will shed light on both basic data and point to appropriate strategies. The project will also entail a pilot intervention targeting adult men and women, as well as juveniles behind bars in Lusaka to as a tool where results will be demonstrated, and important experiences gathered as an advocacy showcase. Through civil society alliance strengthening and advocacy directed at duty bearers the aim is to establish improved linkages between prisons and public health services, as well developing Standard Operating Procedures for ASUD.
