On 25 August 2017, violence erupted in Rakhine State, Myanmar, triggering a swift refugee influx into Bangladesh, 706,364 refugees have arrived in Cox’s Bazar. The monsoon season has led to a further deterioration of conditions within the refugee camps. 10,000 households/46,000 people affected by weather-related incidents including landslides, windstorms, fires, waterlogging and flooding. 40 people have been wounded, and 100+ shelters destroyed leaving over 6,000 displaced. Continued rains are compounding structural damage as there is insufficient time to repair between the rains. In Nov 2017 CARE assumed Site Management (SM) responsibilities for Camp 16 (pop. 22,500) and is leading shelter, water, and sanitation hygiene (WASH) and gender-based violence (GBV) programming. As the rains worsen, destruction is likely to escalate; there is an urgent need for precautionary and response measures, to meet immediate needs and to protect those most vulnerable. CARE seeks funding to relocate households whose shelters have been destroyed, providing them with more durable monsoon resilient structures and resources to repair damaged pathways, reinforcing them and adding street lights in high-risk areas, increasing accessibility and security for women and children.
