Resume

The objective of this project is to address this urgent issue, and to shape evolving digital welfare policy to protect and promote fairness, rights, and inclusion in South Africa. This includes the development of a set of standards of fairness for the use and outcomes of digital technologies and AI in the welfare system that will be co-produced with affected communities. We will then gather evidence on the range of points at which people encounter the digital welfare system and the outcomes of these encounters, to produce insights into how digital technologies, including AI, are advancing or undermining rights and inclusion. Alongside academic publications, we will consolidate our findings and recommendations in two reports and undertake engagement with policymakers to advance our key objective of a more fair, inclusive, and rights-aligned digital welfare system in South Africa.
