Overall targets

The long-term purpose of the intervention is to support small farmers by increasing their resilience to climate change and environmental shocks.

Immediate targets

1. Dec. 2023; at least 3.600 small producers have adopted Climate Change adaptation technologies (CSA Farming), which has improved productivity and reduced their vulnerability to climate change risks. 2. Dec. 2023, small producers have improved linkage to markets for CSA products and 30 % of at least 12.000 targeted beneficiaries have increased their income by 30 % from CSA production. 3. Dec. 2023, LNGOs, ACs, SMUAC and the Cambodian Agricultural Cooperative Alliance have summarised lessons learned and influenced CSA roll-out and market access, which has resulted in mainstreaming of CSA into programs and investment plans at national, provincial and local levels in Cambodia.

Target groups

The primary target group is agricultural cooperatives in Siem Reap, as well as cooperatives from selected areas in ODM and their members. It is expected that approx. 25 agricultural cooperatives formed during other interventions will apply for enrolment in the CSA interventions. 83% of the members are female in SR and 62% in ODM. 12-14.000 small-scale farmers are expected to directly participate in activities (organized by the supported cooperatives). They are expected to benefit from improved technologies, seed varieties, greater food security, higher productivity, increased incomes overall better resilience. 83% of the members are female in SR and 62% in ODM. Secondary target groups include stakeholders along the cropping value chain private and public as well as authorities (commune and provincial councils, provincial governorate as well as staff from line departments at district and provincial levels (approximately 50 people) to be engaged in trainings. The private sector including financial institutions, exporters of agricultural produce and importers of farm inputs are also target groups, which will benefit from “more professional business cooperation” with farmers in cooperatives.

Resume

The long-term purpose of the intervention is to support small farmers by increasing their resilience to climate change and environmental shocks. Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) methods and practices - based on research evidence and CSA lessons learned - are demonstrated to 12-14.000 small farmers under the responsibility of their own Democratic Rural Organisations (DROs). Interventions are aimed at building climate adaptation capacity of app. 50 DROs (1st, 2nd, 3rd tier) and NGOs to (1) promote adoption of CSA practices by at least 3.600 small-holders, who in turn improve productivity by 30 % and reduce vulnerability to climate change risks, (2) improve CSA linkage to inputs and markets, and (3) advocate for institutional support to climate smart agriculture in Cambodia. It is assumed that duty bearers tolerate the “soft advocacy approach” where dialog is favored against confrontation. Furthermore; it is assumed that project activities can be implemented at all levels despite COVID-19.
