Overall targets

After the AAC-language has been adopted and widely used by the students, the families and the school staff, the students and their families have experienced a distinctive life improvement for the handicapped.

Immediate targets

Immediate objectives no. 1 By 2020, about 150 students without speech, 84 staff (30 new TOTs and 54 colleges) and 300 parents at 4 more special schools and 9 special units in Nakuru County practice the AAC method Immediate objectives no. 2 At the end of 2017 the Nakuru Hills Special School and Pangani Special School have achieved status as models schools for AAC. Immediate objectives no. 3 Kenyan Board of Curriculum Development under the Ministry of Education has been introduced to AAC. This results in a clarification on the importance of AAC and by 2020 they have made the decision that AAC will be adopted into the curriculum for special education in Kenya.

Target groups

Primary target group: 154 students with no speech at 4 special schools and 9 special units in Nakuru County (Speech limitation occurs regardless of sex and social status) Secondary target group: 300 parents and relatives to the students. (approx.60% females and 40% males). 54 professional staff at the 4 special schools and 9 special units in Nakuru County. (aprox. 50% females and 50% males)

Formålet med AAC er at sætte kenyanske skoler i stand til at undervise børn uden sprog i metoden Alternativ Supplerende Kommunikation samt gennem dannelse og styrkelse af forældreforeninger at øge presset på skolevæsen, politikere og myndigheder m.h.p. at indføre metoden i skolen. To specialskoler udvikles til at være AAC modelskoler, hvorfra metoden kan udbredes til yderligere 4 specialskoler og 9 specialklasser i Nakuru County. Det langsigtede mål er at få AAC optaget i læseplaner for alle kenyanske specialskoler, samt at Kenya Institute for Special Education tilbyder kurser i metoden. Det springende punkt er, om Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development vælger at optage metoden i curriculum. Udover at bevare presset på myndighederne i relation til AAC ønsker forældreforeningerne også at skabe mulighed for at oprette bofællesskab(er) og beskyttede værksted(er) for unge og voksne med særlige behov i Nakuru County.
