The overall objective of the intervention is to ensure that vulnerable children and youth living in the areas most affected by flooding are safe, healthy and able to continue their educational activities. The strategy of the intervention is based on YDC’s in-depth knowledge and presence within the flood affected communities and legitimacy and experience in working with vulnerable children and youth. The three overall target groups are: Children and youth severely affected by the flooding; local CBOs working within the flood-affected communities; and YDC’s own beneficiaries. Outputs of the intervention include 1) ensuring that 100 extremely vulnerable children return to school and practice safe and healthy hygiene practices, 2) establishing a network of community based organisations from the flood affected areas, and 3) providing YDC beneficiaries with training on flood related disaster risk reduction. Health and sanitary support and disaster risk reduction training contribute towards immediate protection and life saving needs of the target group, while educational support will help insure that the most vulnerable children continue their educational activities and are not denied the related potentials of strengthening their safety and well-being.
