Grassroots Institute

TGI Canada has assisted in forming the Grassroots Institute (TGI) Ukraine since 2019, when the first Summer Field School on Mountain Ecosystems & Resource Management 2020 was to take place in Yaremche, Ukraine. But due to Covid emergencies, it was organized in online mode. Later, from 2021, various activities were conducted in Ukraine or by involving Ukrainian scientists, institutions, and authors. The works of TGI Ukraine were synchronized and documented in order. However, the progress of activities was presented together with TGI Canada in the form of Annual Report 2022-2024 [see the bluish text in the Report]. Hence, the formal formation and foundation of TGI Ukraine starts from April 2022, though the organization was incepted in March 2019. In 2024, the Grassroots Institute was registered in Zakarpattia oblast of Ukraine TGI Ukraine has significant experience in capacity building and institutional engagement. We work closely with farmers, youth groups, and local governance structures, particularly at the municipal & hromada level. Our initiatives include environmental education platforms, youth leadership programmes, and participatory governance tools that foster local ownership and long-term sustainability. We have been increasingly engaged in advocacy for Roma people's human rights and in strengthening the local self-governance system in selected hromadas (OTGs). Gradually, building a team of citizen journalists and volunteers who intend to create wider community engagement and a communication network. Evolving a hybrid radio initiative is another objective.
