Volyn Press-сlub

The civil society organization of the Volyn Region, “Volyn Press-сlub,” was established in 2005. It grew out of the Lutsk Press Club for Reforms, which began its activities in 1994. The organization works to strengthen independent media, raise legal awareness, improve civic culture, and support democratic processes in Ukraine at all levels. Over its history, it has held more than 1,000 events involving media and representatives of local government, business, civil society organizations (including youth groups), education, healthcare, culture, and other sectors. Speakers have included local opinion leaders, human rights defenders, lawmakers, heads of national-level institutions, representatives of embassies and consulates, and international organizations. In partnership with the Volyn Independent Media Union, “Volyn Press-сlub” held three Practical Journalism Schools for college students and young journalists, aimed at raising awareness of professional and ethical standards in media work, story and topic selection, writing high-quality publications, and data analysis. Most of the program’s graduates were hired by local media outlets. In partnership with the NGO “Youth Alternative,” “Volyn Press-сlub” implemented the project “Students for Local Self-Government,” which aimed to familiarize young people with the activities of local councils, provide them with the basic tools of local democracy, enable their participation in decision-making and implementation processes, and give them hands-on experience in local governance. Among the organization’s key areas of focus are human rights, gender equality, and combating discrimination on various grounds. From 2009 to 2022, the Volyn Press-сlub served as the regional coordinator for the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. Among its local partners were a number of youth civil society organizations, as well as Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University.
