History: Uganda Parliamentary Forum for Persons with Disabilities (UPFPWDs) is a non-partisan forum for all Members of Parliament interested in supporting the cause of persons with disabilities. The Patron of the forum is Rt.Hon. Speaker of Parliament. The forum is formed to support the five Members of Parliament representing persons with disabilities that is different categories of disabilities and before the forum was formed, it was only five Members of Parliament representing persons with disabilities but now, we have two hundred Members of Parliament pushing for disabilities issues on the floor of Parliament. The forum helps to broaden and strengthen the cause of persons with disabilities at Parliamentary and Constituency level by working actively with the five Members of Parliament. Purpose: - To work towards the establishment of linkages between the Parliament, the international community, Local governments, civil society and other relevant policy institutions and human rights Organizations to improve the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities. - To work constructively and critically with government Ministries to ensure that national policies and programs are responsive to the situation of Persons with Disabilities. - To create strategic networks and alliances, both in and outside Parliament as well as internationally to engage decision makers to take actions on legislation, policies and programs on issues that affect Persons with Disabilities. UPFPWDs Primary activities are categorized under four objectives: - Objective 1: Monitor and promote the implementation of PWDs policies and legislation. - Objective 2: Influence the review of all existing legislations - Objective 3: Advocate with local government to pass bylaws and ordinances to promote PWDs protection at the community levels. - Objective 4: Advocate for the monitoring, inspection and supervision of the protection of PWDs in institutional care.
