The project contributes to meet the extensive challenges with wildfires in Bolivia through a participatory, civil society and volunteer driven approach to protecting communities and forests in the Chiquitano region. Indigenous and rural communities are often the first to be affected by wildfires exposing pre-existing social inequalities and a lack of equity within the Bolivian society as communities often are provided with inadequate funding, limited resources, and a lack of support from governments and external sources, though many indigenous and rural communities live in the frontline of wildfires. The project focus on organizing, training, and equipping volunteer community firefighting brigades in communities in the municipality of San Rafael in the department of Santa Cruz in eastern Bolivia and on sharing knowledge and lessons learned with other communities and local autoties with a view to scale up good practices and results.
