According to the FAO managed SWALIM, heavy rain started in Ethiopia in the past three weeks and as a result of the rains, some districts along the river Shabelle including Beledweyne and Jowhar impacted by floods. The flood is recurrent phenomena in these districts and it affects thousands of households every year especially, the Deyr season (September to December). In addition to that, the Deyr rain that has recently started in Somalia has compounded the situation due to the tributaries and streams that contributed to the outburst of the river. In early September this year, FSNU and FEWS NET released a comprehensive document about the drought that hit some regions in South-Central Somalia especially Gedo and the expected floods followed by Deyr season in October to December 2019 in south-central regions. This report highlighted that up to 2.1 million people across Somalia are expected to face food consumption gaps, high acute malnutrition, or depletion of assets. For instance, the current floods in Beledweyne and other regions in South-Central Somalia including Jowhar of Middle Shabelle and Gedo region, their situation could worsen if the humanitarian response takes long.
