Resume

Galamsey (illegal mining) has become one of Ghana's most pressing environmental and governance challenges. Government institutions have made efforts to combat the menace of galamsey. However, the persistence of illegal operations demonstrates that enforcement alone is insufficient. Sustainable protection of the environment (rivers/streams, lakes, forests & farmlands) requires informed and organised communities that can exercise their rights and responsibilities as environmental stewards. Thus, the purpose of this project is to support civil society action that protects communities’ right to safe water and a healthy environment through participatory monitoring of illegal mining (galamsey). There will be 160 primary participants and 188 secondary stakeholders participating in the project (50% being women). The project takes place in 2 municipalities (OSM & ANNM) and affects 292,297 citizens of OSM and ANNM as well as approximately 4 million people in Greater Kumasi.
