Resume

Wetland communities in the Pantanal face growing livelihood insecurity due to climate change, disrupted flood cycles, and escalating wildfires. Droughts, extreme fire seasons, and hydrological changes are under-mining traditional income sources such as fishing, small-scale farming, and wetland resource use, while weak governance limits communities’ influence over land-use decisions affecting their territories. The programme - Strengthening Local Rights and Resilience in Climate-Vulnerable Wetlands in Brazil – responds by strengthening ecosystem-compatible livelihoods, community organisation, and wildfire prepar-edness. Implemented by Aktion Amazonas and ECOA - Ecology and Action, it supports producer groups, wom-en’s networks, and community fire brigades, while building leadership capacity and civic engagement. Through participatory approaches and capacity development, the programme strengthens rights, stabilises livelihoods, and enables communities to protect the Pantanal ecosystem.
